About me

I am a lover of food and a public health advocate.  I am embarking on a career shift so that I can spend my 9-5 working on what I am truly passionate about: food.  To start this transition, I went back to school for a master’s degree in public health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

I believe that food should be lovable.  It should taste good, and it should treat you right.  The food we eat shouldn’t make us sick.  The food we eat shouldn’t come at the expense of others, either.  So what does that food look like?  That’s what I’m trying to figure out.  Should it be local or organic?  Fair trade or free range?  Is “natural” or “sustainable” good enough?  The answers aren’t simple.

But I don’t just want to grow, cook, and eat beautiful and delicious food.  Besides, there are tons of blogs for folks who do that better than I do.  I’m also interested in the wider world of food.  For example, how is food used to define us in our values, our culture, and our social status?  Whether we are vegan because we love animals, eat rice because of our family background, or eat oatmeal every day because we can’t afford much more, what we eat can say something about who we are.

In this blog, I hope to explore some of these issues while also experimenting in the kitchen and in my garden.  Come along with me to find new ways to think about food, and a few yummy recipes.

Your blog rocks! It is so interesting to read about your challenge, and even more interesting to see how you came up with VERY clever solutions and recipes. Doreen and I were talking, ( she read the whole thing first, I did today) and decided that we are going to try your recipes. She decided that you should write a cookbook! I hope you do, and we would support by buying one!
